Why Are My Google Ads Leads Low Quality?

Low-quality leads can come from irrelevant searches, unclear ads, weak qualification, inaccurate conversion tracking, or a gap in sales follow-up. The first step is to define what makes an inquiry qualified. Without that definition, a campaign may be judged successful for producing contacts your team cannot turn into customers.

What should count as a qualified lead?

Use criteria your sales team can apply consistently: the person needs your actual service, is in an area you serve, meets any project requirements, and has a realistic path to becoming a customer. Keep the definition simple enough that the team records it. Track spam, job inquiries, vendors, existing customers, and wrong-service calls separately.

Are the ads attracting the wrong expectations?

Review the promises in your ads and the language on the destination page. If you only handle installations, an ad that sounds like a repair service can invite the wrong calls. If projects have a meaningful minimum scope, explain that clearly. Strong qualification can reduce raw lead volume while improving the usefulness of the inquiries.

What should I review inside the campaign?

Examine available search-term data, negative keywords, geographic settings, networks, devices, and the pages receiving clicks. Look for patterns rather than excluding every term after one poor inquiry. Separate brand searches from new-customer discovery where that distinction matters to your reporting. Document changes so you can connect them to later results.

Are your conversion signals rewarding the right behavior?

Counting every phone interaction or button click as an equally valuable conversion can obscure lead quality. Google Ads supports qualified-lead and converted-lead goals using offline outcomes from a CRM or internal lead system. An implementation still needs accurate definitions, reliable matching, and an appropriate data process; enabling a goal alone does not fix poor data.

Could follow-up be part of the problem?

Compare when leads arrive with when someone responds. Check missed calls, incomplete contact details, appointment availability, and whether the salesperson knows what the person requested. Label a lead as unqualified because of fit, rather than because nobody reached it on the first attempt. Marketing and sales need a shared record of the outcome.

How do I compare campaigns fairly?

Report cost per qualified lead, appointment rate, close rate, and customer acquisition cost alongside raw lead counts. Allow time for the sales cycle. A campaign with a higher cost per inquiry can perform better if more of its inquiries become profitable customers. Review the cost of management and creative as well as media when assessing the full program.

What is a sensible first action?

Review a recent sample of actual inquiries with the person who handles sales. Agree on reason codes and identify the most common failure. Then change the part of the campaign or process that explains that pattern. Broad account changes without a diagnosis can make it harder to learn what helped.
